Orlando has created a roadmap to boost local investment in electric vehicles and related infrastructure.
The city has prepared multiple goals with the help of an e-mobility task force comprised of 18 members who work with the government, utilities, transit authorities and businesses. The group began meeting in 2021 over the past six months to create goals that involve increasing local electric vehicle infrastructure, use and access within the city.
The goals include:
Providing equitable, affordable access to e-mobility
Accelerating EV adoption in multiple transportation sectors
Developing a robust charging ecosystem
Advancing multimodal e-mobility options
Currently, there are 3,852 electric vehicles registered within the city of Orlando as of second-quarter 2022 and 99,420 in Florida. The city’s projects it will have 17,640-52,940 electric vehicles and 2,005 to 6,020 EV chargers in Orlando by 2030.
The city’s measures to put changes in place include quarterly meetings, presentations to the public on progress every two years and updates to the roadmap every five years due to the changing nature of e-mobility.
Other stakeholders also are involved with electric vehicle infrastructure. For instance, task force member Central Florida Expressway Authority plans to add a mile-long segment of electric vehicle charging as a part of its Lake/Orange Expressway project. One of the additional focuses of scaling the project will be to have the utility infrastructure that makes it possible.
“The reliability and robustness of the national power grid is something that in general becomes an issue, but is magnified when you talk about actually providing a structure in a highway that provides power,” said CFX Executive Director Laura Kelley. “That is one that definitely can be overcome, but it will take a focus on the national level.”
Every $1 billion invested in non-residential vehicle charging infrastructure would create an average of 10,500-14,500 jobs per year, according to projections by Advanced Energy Economy and the International Energy Agency.
