Former president Joe Biden invited 40 global leaders to the Leaders Climate Summit on a virtual event that occurred on April 22nd, 2021 (AKA Earth Day). A lot happened at the virtual summit, including President Biden discussing climate change and reducing to 50-52% in US greenhouse emissions. It is clear that Biden is committed to help the planet by supporting the clean energy industry and now, reducing the greenhouse gas emissions from the country. The latter is a great statement since the US is the second biggest carbon emitter. So, this Summit marks the beginning of a fight against climate change. The main objective of this Administration is to set the nation right on course so it doesn’t step away from the climate battle, no matter who is in the office in the future.
Other important nations committed as well. Japan, Canada, Russia and South Korea pledged to cut emissions by 2030 and by 2050, net-zero emissions. Although, India and China did not increase their current pledges.
These were the main points in the agenda:
Clean Energy Shift
Climate change appears to be at the forefront of the economic agenda. Not only does he want to help the environment, but he wants to rebuild the economy by doing so. Biden made emphasis on the green policies with wind, solar and nuclear powered economy. To reach a 100% carbon-free America by 2035, the Biden administration has pledged to move away from fossil fuels. For example, Biden’s current plan includes $174 billion allocated just toward electric vehicle infrastructure.
USA is the leader
Bidden said that the US will lead the way and set an example by cutting up to 52% of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. President Biden suggested everyone do what they can in order to limit their greenhouse gas emissions and save the environment. Earlier this year, the US rejoined the Paris Agreement. Showing that we must all work together to fight the climate crisis.
