The Solar Veloroute Peter Kuczia designed The Solar Veloroute since cycling and pathways are becoming more and more evident in modern transportation within cities today. Mobility is changing and becoming more and more oriented towards sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions. With this in mind, architect Peter Kuczia has reinterpreted the typical bicycle lane through a sustainable perspective. The Solar Veloroute is a multifunctional photovoltaic pathway for cyclists and pedestrians. With the energy provided by the track, the system also powers charging stations along the route.

According to Kuczia, cycling just one kilometer of the Solar Veloroute can power 750 homes since it produces 2,000 MWh of electricity per kilometer of the bike path. And at night, the Solar Veloroute lights up after gathering the solar energy during the day to provide a good route for pedestrians and cyclists at any time of the day.

The Solar Veloroute is made for flexibility in use, this meaning that its components can fit at almost any location. The semi-enclosed bicycle path is adjustable to suit the local needs. Currently, the design is in use in Switzerland and Dubai.

India’s Cochin International Airport

India’s Cochin International Airport has become the first world’s completely Solar-Powered Airport. This airport produces more energy than it consumes due to floating solar panels. The panels are located on a golf course lake and are connected to the state electricity board to provide energy to the airport. The airport produces 40 MWp per day.

India’s airport began in 2015 to build solar installations to become what it is now, the first Solar-Powered Airport. India’s Cochin International Airport is now completely run by sustainable energy due to a recent installation of two additional solar plants. The airport has a golf course with 12 lakes. Two of the twelve lakes are now the locations for the 1300 photovoltaic panels; The lakes are linked to the Kerala State Electricity Board power grid. These two new installations added 452 KWh to the airport’s energy production capacity.

Opting for floating solar panels has become a good option since it is perfect for locations with limited land.
