Starting in May, Florida Power & Light customers will see increases in their bills, and by 2025 their monthly electric bills will rise by 18%, as the price of natural gas has been increasing more than expected.
Rate Hikes
As stated by the FPL, a typical household now paying $99.05 for 1,000 kWh a month would pay $103.02 in May, and by 2025 it will rise to $117. The FPL uses 1,000 kWh as a guideline; nevertheless, electricity consumption varies depending on each customers’ usage.
According to the FPL, other consumers with increases in their rates will be the micro and midsize enterprises customers; their annual rates will rise 3.9% to 4.4%among 2021 and 2025. However, the utility has stated that despite the rate hikes, residential, micro, and midsize enterprises’ customers’ bills will continue below the national average by 2025.
Fund for improvements
Rate hikes, according to the FPL, would help fund the following improvements: The installation of 30,000,000 solar panels in Florida by 2030, construction of a solar battery claimed to be the world’s largest one, and the NextEra’s plant able to produce green hydrogen from solar power, and new infrastructure to serve new customers.
